A staff member of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed’s office filed a lawsuit against a tax preparation service on claims it fraudulently prepared her tax returns to obtain a bigger refund, WSB-TV reports.
Jennifer Ogunsola told the news source her tax returns weren’t complicated last year and all she needed to submit was her W-2 form and details of her student loans.
Ogunsola approached a consumer investigator in hopes of figuring out why she was having problems using a tax service. Upon reviewing her files, the investigator found the tax preparer reported to the government that she owned a business, which she does not.
After the tax preparer fraudulently claimed more than $18,000 of deductions on her return, a check of $5,000 was sent to the tax preparer.
“A couple weeks later, I get a letter from the IRS and the letter from the IRS is saying that they’re reviewing my taxes. Something just did not feel right,” Ogunsola said. “I’m enraged. I was enraged because now it looks like Jennifer Ogunsola is scamming the IRS.”
State agents are investigating the tax preparer, may be filing an errors and omissions insurance claim in response to the legal issues.
