Colorado has seen a number of storms over the last few weeks, which have caused damage to homes and cars, and flooding in Greeley is having an affect on businesses in the area. Greeley’s Building Inspection Division reported that 11 homes and 12 businesses have water damage due to flooding, which occurred on June 10, per NBC affiliate KBTV.
The town was fully aware that the storm would cause flooding, but the storms created 9.16 feet of water, which was more than they were expecting. Flooding has not been the only problem, as spring runoff from the melting snow in the area has also caused difficulties for the town.
“The problem we’re having right now is there are only two roads going into Greeley, 59th and 11th Avenue, that are north and south,” Greeley Street Superintendent Jerry Pickett told KBTV. “So, we’re getting a lot of traffic congestion and people trying to get home in the afternoon.”
Some business owners reported that they have lost everything. Carl Kerkseik, owner of DBE Manufacturing and Supply, told The Denver Post that his business has suffered damage from two floods in the last 10 months and all his merchandise is gone.
KBTV reported that the flooding is slowly starting to get closer to other businesses, thereby deterring patrons.
When water damage occurs, it could ruin wiring, seep into the carpets and ruin the structure of a building. Business owners may have to dip into their own pockets to pay for repairs. Shop owners can sign up for business insurance for financial and legal protection if their businesses are damaged by flooding again. But owners should be sure to seek all their options, as flood insurance is usually sold separately.
