When small to medium-sized businesses are faced with a computing disaster, they don’t have time to wait a number of days for recovery, which is why SMBs are beginning to use the cloud, mobility and virtualization to help with unexpected incidents, according to a research survey by Symantec.

The research found 35 percent of the surveyed businesses are using mobile devices, while 34 percent have or are planning to use virtualized servers, and 40 percent of businesses are using the public cloud.

“Technologies such as virtualization, cloud computing, and mobility, combined with a sound plan and comprehensive security and data protection solutions, enable SMBs to better prepare for and quickly recover from potential disasters such as floods or fires, as well as lost or stolen mobile devices and laptops,” said Steve Cullen, senior vice president of worldwide marketing for SMB and Cloud at Symantec.

According to the survey, 71 percent of respondents claimed their company’s disaster preparedness improved when they began using virtualization. While disaster recovery can be aided by cutting-edge technology, businesses should of course still make sure they have business insurance policies that can also help in the case of a disaster.
