Many business owners have a psychological aversion to purchasing a business insurance policy because they believe nothing catastrophic will happen to their business, according to a report from FM Global.

“A fundamental tenet of human nature is deniability, the belief that bad things will not happen to me,” said Dr. Steve Timmons, founder and president of Solutions for Organizational Survival, who was quoted in the report.

Michael Topf, an experienced safety, health and environmental training expert, echoed the sentiments of Timmons, saying that there are three elements of thought humans have when thinking about a disaster: the bad thing will not happen; if a bad thing does occur, it will not happen to me; and if the bad thing does affect me, the effects will be minimal.

Business owners cannot have these thoughts when it comes to purchasing insurance. They need to know that owning a business itself is a risk, and it is important to become protected from those risks as much as possible.

Business insurance can provide coverage for business property and liability, which can also cover different types of disasters that a business may face.
