According to a recent survey conducted by FileTrek, 90 percent of respondents believe people remove confidential files from the workplace, with 79 percent believing the removal of those files is grounds for termination.

“Business leaders need to be aware of the changing attitudes toward intellectual property in the modern workplace,” said Dale Quayle, CEO of FileTrek. “Today’s workforce believes information is an asset to be shared, and while companies have benefited from this collaborative attitude with new technologies and increased productivity, there are risks too.”

Protecting intellectual property is a concern of many business leaders, demonstrating the importance of purchasing professional liability insurance, which may include IP coverage. To guard against the loss of important papers, businesses might secure valuable papers coverage as part of a property insurance policy.

The report also found 40 percent of respondents believe it is never necessary to remove confidential files from the office; however, 32 percent believe it is acceptable only under the circumstances that require an employee to finish a late night project.

According to the Evansville Courier & Press, a local newspaper in Indiana, businesses need to use the right processes to protect themselves from losses, might include using security cameras.
