Many public entities don’t know of the cyber risks they face on a daily basis, despite the number of cyberattacks and data breaches that have occurred in the past few years, reported National Underwriter magazine. To address some of the misconceptions public entities may have, the magazine created a list of reasons they should invest in cyber liability insurance.
The magazine said some public entities believe they are not a target for cyberattacks, but they are mistaken. With the amount of confidential information they possess, they are some of the most targeted organizations when it comes to certain hacking issues.
Public entities also believe they have the necessary technology and software to fight off potential data breaches. According to the magazine, even the most complicated software can be infiltrated by hackers due to common human errors that create vulnerabilities.
While public entities need to be sure they are properly protected from cyberthreats, the state of Michigan took action into their own hands by launching the Michigan Cyber Initiative, which will spark a number of plans of action to put an end to cybercrime.
“The benefits of online technology are enormous,” said Michigan Governor Rick Snyder. “Unfortunately, attacks on our personal safety and economic security through the Internet continue to grow and expand.”
