Before Your Renewal

  • Request your current E-Mod worksheet from your carrier or broker
  • Confirm every claim listed is accurate and shows the correct status (open/closed)
  • Check that claim reserves match what you’d expect given the actual injury/incident
  • Verify your classification code(s) match your current operations
  • Cross-check reported payroll against actual payroll records by category — payroll guide →
  • Confirm officer/owner payroll exclusions or caps were applied correctly, if applicable
  • Review whether old claims that should have closed are still showing as open
  • Ask whether a payroll audit discrepancy from a prior year was ever resolved

Red Flags That Usually Mean You’re Overpaying

  • Your E-Mod has stayed above 1.0 for multiple years with no corresponding claims explanation
  • You’ve changed the nature of your work but never updated your classification
  • You’ve never seen your actual E-Mod worksheet
  • Your premium jumped significantly at renewal with no corresponding claims activity
